چکیده

There is a sequence of random numbers x1, x2 . . . , xn and so on. Numbers are independent of each other, but all numbers are from the same continuous distribution. If xi−1 < xi > xi+1, then xi is a local maximum. Here, we show that the probability mass function (PMF) fm(d) of distances d between local maxima is non-parametric and the same for any probability distribution of random numbers in the sequence, and that the average distance is exactly 3. We present a method of computation of this PMF and its table for distances betwen 2 and 29. This PMF is confirmed to match distance distributions of sample random number sequences, which were created by pseudo-random number generators or obtained from ”true” random number sources. 1. Average distnace between local maxima Let’s take any number in the sequence and find out the probability that it’s a local maximum. Definition 1. A number xi is a local maximum, if the following condition is true xi−1 < xi > xi+1. First, we’ll use a combinatorial approach. Consider the following sequence (Figure 1) of pseudo-random numbers generated by MS Excel RAND() function: (1) 0.935536495 (2) 0.191531578 (3) 0.429049655 (4) 0.308968021 (5) 0.179540986 (6) 0.401329789 (7) 0.71581906 (8) 0.604617962 (9) 0.877254876 (10) 0.973280207 (11) 0.489033299 (12) 0.912367351 (13) 0.604552972 (14) 0.039395302 (15) 0.3780448 Date: August 12, 2006. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification. Application of tests of goodness of fit in determining the probability density function for spacing of steel sets in tunnel support system

One of the conventional methods for temporary support of tunnels is to use steel sets with shotcrete. The nature of a temporary support system demands a quick installation of its structures. As a result, the spacing between steel sets is not a fixed amount and it can be considered as a random variable. Hence, in the reliability analysis of these types of structures, the selection of an appropri...

On the Distribution of Random Geometric Graphs

Random geometric graphs (RGGs) are commonly used to model networked systems that depend on the underlying spatial embedding. We concern ourselves with the probability distribution of an RGG, which is crucial for studying its random topology, properties (e.g., connectedness), or Shannon entropy as a measure of the graph’s topological uncertainty (or information content). Moreover, the distributi...

Retrospective-Prospective Differential Inclusions and Their Control by the Differential Connection Tensors of Their Evolutions: The Trendometer

There are two different motivations of this study: retrospectiveprospective differential inclusions and differential connection tensors in networks of both continuous-time nonsmooth functions and time series, and several consequences: control of dynamical systems by differential connectionist tensors, detection by a “trendometer” of all local extrema of differentiable functions, but “wild” as t...

Using Weibull probability distribution to calibrate prevailing wind applying in oil spill simulation

In the Persian Gulf, the major source of oil pollution is related to the transportation of tankers, offshore production and discharges by coastal refineries. The water dynamical field has been obtained using a new hydrodynamic model. Local wind is recognized as the principal driving force combining to the water dynamic field to determine oil drift on the sea surface. The Weibull probability dis...

LPKP: location-based probabilistic key pre-distribution scheme for large-scale wireless sensor networks using graph coloring

Communication security of wireless sensor networks is achieved using cryptographic keys assigned to the nodes. Due to resource constraints in such networks, random key pre-distribution schemes are of high interest. Although in most of these schemes no location information is considered, there are scenarios that location information can be obtained by nodes after their deployment. In this paper,...
